SPEAKER

John Barstow introduced Karl Lindholm, a graduate of and professor at Middlebury College. Karl also writes a column for the Addison Independent, for sports fans and others.

Karl gave an overview of the baseball playoffs, and his opinion of various teams and players. He pointed out that some of the winningest teams are not the best funded. Money is not everything, even in major league baseball.

Baseball has made positive rules changes this year. The pitch clock has shortened games by 24 minutes. Attendance is up 9%. They still need to adopt an automatic umpire.

Karl really enjoys watching college level sports. Middlebury‘s Panthers are an outstanding baseball team. Vermonters also can watch high-level baseball players at Centennial Field in Burlington, and the Red Sox have many minor league teams throughout New England. Karl closed by talking about the overlooked black players from the Negro leagues of the segregation era. Many of the greatest players of all time time played in these leagues.

Raffle: No winner this week.
